Body-Island: Sculptures from the Classic of Mountains and Seas

山と海 – Mountains and Seas

Long ago, there were no boundaries between the human body and the earth.
Mountains were bones, rivers were veins, islands were the soul’s resting places.

The Nine-Tailed Fox danced across mountains, her tail-feathers slicing through the morning mist.
The Sea God slumbered in the deep blue, waves chanting ancient songs.
Queen Mother of the West was still a moonlit forest princess, listening to the whispers of the sky, living with beasts and spirits.
Giants chased the sun, headless warriors swung their swords, and wizards sang spells to forge stones and mend the heavens.

In those ancient days, humans, gods, and beasts shared a single world.
Trees stretched their limbs toward the sky. The land pulsed with a fiery heart.
Every mountain and river had a voice. Every star and drop of dew held the memory of life.

At the place where clouds rise and light dances on water,
a traveler picks up a shard of pottery etched with the totem of a divine beast.
As fingers trace the warmth of the clay, the wind begins to murmur—
something is awakening.

An ancient spirit whispers:
“Come home. This is your mountain, your sea—your body, your soul’s return.”
