Body-Island: Sculptures from the Classic of Mountains and Seas

山と海 – Mountains and Seas

Long ago, there were no boundaries between the human body and the earth.
Mountains were bones, rivers were veins, and islands were the soul’s resting grounds.

The Nine-Tailed Fox danced nimbly across the peaks, her tail-feathers slicing through morning mist.
The Sea God slumbered deep in the blue, as waves echoed ancient songs.
The Queen Mother of the West was still a forest sorceress, listening to the sky’s whispers under the moonlight, living among beasts and spirits.
Giants chased the sun, headless warriors swung their swords endlessly, and wizards sang incantations, forging stones to mend the heavens.

In that world, humans, gods, and beasts lived together.
Trees reached toward the sky, and the land pulsed with its blazing heart.
Each mountain and river had a voice; every star and dewdrop held the memory of life.

At the edge of a cloud, by the shimmer of the waves,
a traveler picks up a shard of pottery etched with the totem of a mythic beast.
As he gently traces the warmth of the clay, the wind murmurs in his ear—something begins to awaken.
An ancient soul whispers:
“Come home. This is your mountain, your sea—your body, the place where your soul returns.”
