Body-Island: Sculptures from the Classic of Mountains and Seas

山と海 – Mountains and Seas

Long ago, there were no boundaries between the human body and the land.
Mountains were bones, rivers were veins, and islands were the resting places of souls.

The Nine-Tailed Fox leapt lightly across mountains, her tail-feathers slicing the morning mist.
The Sea God slumbered in the deep, waves echoing ancient chants.
The Queen Mother of the West was still a magical forest princess, listening to the sky's whispers beneath moonlight, living among beasts and spirits.
Giants chased the sun, headless warriors swung their swords endlessly, and wizards chanted spells to forge stones and mend the heavens.

In those ancient times, gods, beasts, and humans shared one world.
Trees reached toward the sky, the land pulsed with a burning heart.
Every mountain and river had its voice; every star and drop of dew carried the memory of life.

At the place where clouds emerge and waves glimmer,
a traveler finds a shard of clay etched with the totem of a sacred beast.
As they trace the warmth of the earth with their fingers, the wind whispers softly—
something begins to awaken.

An ancient spirit murmurs:
“Come home. This is your mountain, your sea—your body, your soul’s return.”
