Body-Island: Sculptures from the Classic of Mountains and Seas

Mountains and Seas

Long ago, there were no boundaries between the human body and the land.
Mountains were bones, rivers were veins, and islands were the soul’s resting places.

The Nine-Tailed Fox danced over ridgelines, tail-feathers slicing the mist.
The Sea God slumbered in the depths, waves echoing ancient songs.
Queen Mother of the West was still a moonlit forest sorceress, listening to the sky’s whispers, living with beasts and spirits.
Giants chased the sun, headless warriors swung their blades, and wizards sang spells to mend the sky with stone.

In those times, gods, beasts, and humans shared a single world.
Trees reached skyward. The earth pulsed with a blazing heart.
Every mountain and river had its voice; every star and drop of dew held the memory of life.

At the edge of the clouds, by the shimmering shore,
a traveler finds a shard of ancient clay carved with the image of a sacred beast.
As their fingers trace its warmth, the wind begins to murmur—
something stirs within.

An ancient spirit whispers:
“Come home. This is your mountain, your sea—your body, your soul’s return.”
